A Winter Radio Call
by Satomi Mills
Gazing out the window of the train, Samantha smiled. The scenery was simply splendid. Everything was decorated so wonderfully for the holidays. Today was an exciting day. It was finally the day of the production of the Nutcracker. Months of practice had prepared her for this momentous day.
It was even more exciting than it would normally be, because Samantha's best friend, Leah was coming! Earlier that month Samantha had written to Leah telling her all about getting the part of the Sugar Plum Fairy. She had also sent a ticket for the show. Several days ago, Samantha had received a return letter from Leah, saying that she was excited and couldn't wait.
When Samantha entered the theater, she gasped. She had never seen the theater so amazingly decorated before. In the center of the reception room there was a giant tree. Approaching it, Samantha saw it had miniatures of the various characters of the Nutcracker. The whole room reminded Samantha of a bright and happy carousel. Smiling, Samantha went backstage to get ready for the show. Several minutes later, the show began. Since the Sugar Plum Fairy only made an appearance in the Second Act, Samantha had a bit of time before her part. While waiting, Samantha gazed at the audience from backstage, looking for Leah.
Disappointed at not being able to find her bestie in the audience, Samantha watched the dancers. Sighing, Samantha composed herself to be ready for her part. It would soon be her turn.
The curtain fell, showing that the show was finished. It had passed in a blur, but everyone had done such a wonderful job. Samantha headed to the dressing room to get changed. When she was almost finished taking down her bun, a knock came from the door.
"Come in"
"THAT. WAS. AMAZING." a familiar voice said.
Samantha turned around, smiling widely and embraced Leah.
"I thought you didn't come" remarked Samantha relived Leah had come after all.
"Yeah, sorry about that, traffic was horrible" replied Leah grimacing. "but thankfully I was able to get here just as the Second Act began" she continued, brightening "Wonderful job!"
"Thanks so much! I'm just glad that you are here now." Samantha replied, smiling. "Want to get some hot chocolate at my place?"
"Sure!"
The two best friends then headed to Samantha's apartment where they laughed and talked late into the night.
